What Does Math Have To Do With A Blood Test?

When we think about mathematics, we don’t usually think about blood tests. However, over the past month, I have had the opportunity to work with a pediatrician on research related to preventative health, which has shown me just how closely mathematics and medicine are connected.
One example is a lipid panel, a blood test that measures different types of fats in the blood, including cholesterol and triglycerides. You may have seen terms such as LDL, HDL, or total cholesterol on a lab report, but the numbers that correspond to them are very significant.
LDL is often referred to as “bad” cholesterol because elevated levels of it can contribute to plaque buildup in the arteries. HDL, sometimes called “good” cholesterol, helps transport cholesterol away from the bloodstream. Triglycerides are another type of fat that the body stores and uses for energy.
However, these numbers are not the most meaningful on their own. Doctors weigh them alongside factors such as age, health history, and previous test results. Looking at changes over time can also reveal patterns that a single measurement might not show.
This is where mathematics becomes especially important. Researchers use statistics to analyze large amounts of health data, identify patterns, understand risk factors, and determine which trends are important to turn into action. Learning about this has changed the way I think about mathematics. Math is not limited to equations and calculations, and it can help us understand our bodies, recognize potential health risks, and make more informed decisions about our lifestyles.
Preventative health is especially exciting for me because it focuses on being proactive. By using data to better understand our health, we can identify potential concerns earlier and take steps toward a healthier future. Behind all of that lies math, a tool we never stop using our entire life.
